Gunns Camp
Lodge style Vintage venture
Go with the flow
Gunns Camp is one of the last luxurious, vintage safari resorts in the Okavango Delta, taking you back to past times, when explorers roamed the bush (and had it to themselves). This camp, off-the-beaten path, overlooks the southwestern area of the legendary Chief’s Island bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. And your Africa journey couldn’t begin in more adventurous fashion: Levitate and fly over this land, feeling like a bird as a twenty minute light aircraft transfer from Maun takes you deep into the Okavango Delta. Look out the round window that serves as a frame for the magnificent, winding papyrus fringed channels, making up for one of the world’s greatest wetland wonders. High above the ground, this natural splendor stretches out below you. Blending in naturally with its surroundings, Gunns Camp is set under leafy palms and African Ebony, embracing the sights and sounds of the delta.
Accommodation offered at Gunns Camp consists of six fully furnished, lustrous meru tents with beautiful unfiltered African light and en-suite facilities boasting standalone baths and outside private showers – for a cleanse under the stars. Set on raised platforms, the tents are discreetly situated ensuring privacy, tranquility and fabulous Okavango Delta views. The tents are traditionally furnished with a mix of solid wood and African furniture, including a lounge area as well as private verandah. Raised wooden walkways crossing the wetlands link the tents to the main camp – and at some sections you might have to wait for elephants crossing. No worries, there’s no need to be anywhere ‘on time’ - maybe just for knocking back an icy drink at the elevated, well-stocked bar. Here, you can soak in the views, or unwind in the lounge room before it is time for the ‘braai’ (a traditional African barbecue and specialty of the chefs at Gunns Camp) around the campfire boma. For those warm hours during the day, you can put your feet up and recline at the swimming pool. There is no WiFi or phone signal at Gunns Camp so bring a book (or two) and admire your surroundings – maybe residential elephant Dave with his little one will drop by. Just relax and sink in a deep tranquility of this swampy delta – and make sure you are not ‘rescued’ for a couple of days.
Activities at Gunns Camp
At Gunns Camp, you meet your personal guides upon arrival and they will be devoted to your Okavango Delta safari experience during the entire stay. Go down to the water’s edge and track the bustling river life: look up for birds, look down for fish, and look around for all other habitats of this fertile land. For game viewing in this region, there is no better way than in a traditional canoe. Gliding through crystal clear water and gently flowing reed, it a serene and enchanting experience. The mokoro canoes are propelled from the stern by skilled guides, giving you all the time to kick back, grab binoculars and spy on elephants, zebras, hippos and other wildlife that is looking for some cooling splashes. If you feel like spending the whole day exploring, the camp will provide a bush picnic, lulled by the frog orchestra. Or how about some island camping in the Okavango Delta? Your guide will pack the mokoro, set camp and after that, it is all about the taking in the ambience of the surrounding delta waters and star-studded skies above you. Before you drift away to sleepd, listen to lions roaring and baboons howling. The next day might be the perfect moment for a bush walk or motorboat trip; you never know what you will bump into, just let the water take you with its flow.
Tripadvisor comments Gunns Camp
A wilderness experience in five start tent style accommodation. An experience not to be missed. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food, beverage and company were fantastic. Our guides, Dicks, Rodgers and Captain were outstanding and made sure we saw as many animals as possible. The mokoro is a must do. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

This is an amazing place, thanks to Gary, Jade, Dicks our main guide and all the other staff for making it an experience of a lifetime. We arrived on a charter flight and the experience started.. The tents were very comfortable, clean and had the best outside bathroom (I am not a camper) but this is the exception. The food was great, the guides excellent and I was really sad to leave. The pool is highly recommended to cool your body off and very refreshing... We saw plenty of animals big and small. thank you all!....
