DAYS 2 and 3
Norman Carr's name is legendary in the history of Zambian wildlife conservation and the foundation of the walking safari. His legacy lives on in his lodges and camps in the SOUTH LUANGWA VALLEY, of which Kapani and Mchenja are two, all offering excellent accommodation, guiding and service.
First to Kapani Lodge, where you will be gently eased into the rhythms of safari life with the opportunity to take great game drives as well as visit the local village and community projects. The camp is on mains electricity and the nine spacious rooms all have overhead fans and walk-in mosquito nets!
The bar and dining area is set on a deck overlooking the Kapani Lagoon, an ox bow lake which is attractive to animals, while the main sitting area and library are in a centrally located thatched building. There is also a swimming pool.

DAYS 4 to 6
By road game viewing along the way to Mchenja Camp, set on the banks of the Luangwa river. With just five stylishly designed tented rooms each set under its own thatched roof, what a great place to continue this wildlife safari! Explore the surrounding area on foot with a guide or go further afield on a game drive in an area renowned for its leopard sightings.

DAYS 7 to 9
From here you will drive to Tafika Camp in the north of the park, continuing to keep an eye out for game on the way. The five spacious guest chalets are constructed from thatch and reed and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
Along with daily game drives, you can visit a local village, take a scenic flight in a microlight and experience the thrill of night drives.

DAYS 10 to 12
Next you transfer back to Mfuwe, fly into Malawi and transfer onwards to LIVINGSTONE’S 'LAKE OF STARS' at CAPE MACLEAR and peaceful Mumbo Island. If you are feeling particularly energetic, you can paddle yourself out to the island in a kayak, otherwise travel by boat which will, in any case, be transporting your bags.
Built of timber, thatch and canvas, and perched on high rocks overlooking the water, this little island camp has comfortably furnished tents with shaded decks, hammocks and hot bucket showers. It blends with the African bush to create a 'Robinson Crusoe' atmosphere of rustic charm.
In addition to kayaking, the cool, clear fresh waters of the lake offer excellent swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving - what a location in which to try any of these without salt water, tides and currents to contend with! And watch out for the playful Cape clawless and spotted-neck otters that regularly join guests as they snorkel or swim.

DAY 13
By boat and road back to Lilongwe and fly overnight to London via Johannesburg

What About?

If paddling your own canoe appeals, consider combining this with game viewing in remote areas along the LOWER ZAMBEZI. Goliath Safaris, one of Southern Africa's leading adventure and safari operators, offers canoe safaris sleeping on islands or the banks of the river. If you would prefer to explore this area by canoe but sleep in a proper bed, make the renowned Chongwe River Camp your base or even the stunning, private Chongwe River House.
