DAYS 2 to 4
Your private guide will be waiting for you at Kigali airport to drive you through the beautiful terraced hills that characterise much of Rwanda's landscape. A natural bridge on the outskirts of Ruhengeri at the base of the VIRUNGA MOUNTAINS, formed from a solidified lava flow, is a fascinating reminder of the volcanic activity that shaped the whole country. Indeed it is known as the ‘land of a thousand hills’ and the fertile volcanic soils means that, when permitted, terraces for agriculture climb from the valleys to virtually every summit contributing to the amazing scenery.
Climbing gradually to the base of the spectacular volcanoes of the Virunga range, you arrive at the Volcanoes Virunga Lodge set on the top of a hill. The eight rooms take advantage of the magnificent setting and views.
The lush slopes of the Virunga Mountains provide an appropriately dramatic setting for the thrilling experience of viewing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The Parc National des Volcans is one of the last refuges of these gorillas and you will trek to visit a habituated family. Once you reach the gorillas, you can spend an hour with them. Some gorilla families can be more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially if it is wet and muddy.
It is also now possible to trek to see troops of habituated golden monkeys in the forests and nearby there are three stunning lakes, Burera, Ruhondo and Karago that are well worth a visit.

Head back to the capital, KIGALI, for a night at the Kigali Serena Hotel which will allow time to tour the city and visit the Genocide Museum and Memorial, a moving testimony to this country’s past that it has courageously overcome.

DAYS 6 to 8
We make use of a direct flight from Kigali to the Kogatende airstrip in the SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK where you will be met by your driver guide from Hoopoe Safaris.
Set in a spectacular location on the western slopes of Makoma Hill in the game-rich Seronera Valley, Lemala Ewanjan Camp is a deluxe seasonal camp with seven comfortable tents.
You will have two full days game viewing in the major areas of central, southern and western Serengeti, all easily accessible, and at the end of the day you will return to the privacy and solitude of the camp with its staggering views of the grasslands and wonderful sunsets. The mess tent offers separate living and dining areas with a central bar and is furnished with leather sofas, rugs and chests.

On to the NGORONGORO CRATER for a final day of game viewing in a unique environment before a night at Gibbs Farm in the NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS. Still a working farm, the original farmhouse and guest cottages have been transformed and offer good accommodation in a delightful garden setting.

DAY 10
A leisurely departure and drive to Arusha for the flight from Kilimanjaro airport back to Nairobi, and onwards overnight to London

What About?

For a very different experience, plan at least eight days into an itinerary to CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO, the highest free-standing mountain in Africa. Our choice operator is Hoopoe Safaris, who offer two routes. 'Machame' passes through tropical montane rainforest and on to the snow of Kili while 'Lemosho' is ideal for those wanting more privacy, a slower climb, and all the best scenery of the mountain.

Situated on the edge of RWANDA'S PARC NATIONAL DES VOLCANS, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is in a great location for the early start needed for trekking. It is part of the Governors' Camp Collection and the company's 30 plus years' experience in luxury-tented safaris in Kenya was behind the construction and beautiful appointment of the guest cottages. Now its expertise is at work in the operation of the lodge which is owned by a Community Trust. Funds raised by Sabyinyo are driving socio-economic and conservation initiatives in the local community while the gorilla trekking permits contribute to the protection of these endangered animals.
