Kenya's bird life is amazing year round; however the flowers and insects of the rainy season make for even more phenomenal sightings! From Nairobi National Park to the Masai Mara and including Meru and the Great Rift Valley, wonderful game viewing areas are combined with prime birding locations
The Emakoko: 1 night
Elsa's Kopje: 3 nights
Loldia House: 2 nights
Elephant Pepper Camp: 3 nights
Including - local flights, transfers, Park fees, all meals and drinks and bird/safari activities
The safari starts with the journey from the airport into NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK and to The Emakoko, a family-owned and run lodge artfully built into the side of a valley on the Mbagathi River bordering the Park. Despite being so close to the city, or could that possibly be the reason, the bird populations are impressive.
DAYS 2 to 4
The next day, fly to MERU NATIONAL PARK where the Adamsons released their lions. Stay at Elsa's Kopje on Mughwango Hill, the site of George Adamson's first camp. The open-front rooms allow magnificent views over the charming park, especially of the sunrise from the comfort of a king-size bed!
Meru has an enormous diversity of habitats, from cool forests at 1000m in the west, dropping down to semi-desert plains with giant baobab and commiphora trees. It has thirteen clear spring fed rivers lined with palms and riverine forest and its location, straddling the equator, results in an overlap of species not usually found together. You'll have the chance to go on game walks as well as take drives by day and after dark in a traditional open safari vehicle and you will soon start to tick from the list of over 400 species of bird to be found.
DAYS 5 to 6
Staying at Loldia House whose gardens run down to the shore of Lake Naivasha in the GREAT RIFT VALLEY, gives easy access for a day in the acacia woodland and open grasslands of LAKE NAKURU’S NATIONAL PARK where at times millions of greater and lesser flamingos fringe the lake in shades of pink.
Loldia has a resident ornithologist and you can enjoy the wonderful bird life on foot, on game drives and by boat around Lake Naivasha and on nearby lake Ol Odian which often attracts many flamingos. From the boat trips on the lakes you can get close to cormorants drying their wings, pink backed pelicans, herons, colourful kingfishers and fish eagles. Other commonly seen birds around the lakes include the goliath heron, jacana, great white egret, white fronted bee-eater and the saddle-billed stork.
A light aircraft will take you to the MASAI MARA, a vast wilderness of diverse habitats with rolling grassland plains, lush riverine forests and boulder-strewn escarpments which offer fantastic opportunities throughout the year whether you be in search of the threatened migratory cornrake and Jackson's widowbird or to witness the famous wildebeest migration. The Mara is home to a wide variety of birds with over 450 species listed including 6 out of the 7 species of Kenyan vulture.
Located in the heart of the Masai Mara ecosystem in the game-rich MARA NORTH CONSERVANCY is Elephant Pepper Camp whose canvas tents, overlooking savannah plains, offer a luxurious but authentic safari experience.
Fly back to Nairobi to either continue to the coast or to fly home
If there are specific species on your list, please let us know so that we can design an itinerary to put you in the optimal places to achieve the ticks!
